About Nate Perisic

Nathan Perisic is a Research Associate and Writer at Beneath the Waves. He currently manages the Beneath the Waves blog. A passionate scuba diver and conservationist, he grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, and has spent his life around the water. Born in Boston to Swiss parents and the oldest of 3 boys, Nathan is keen to nurture and protect what he loves. For the last 7 years, he has worked in marine conservation hotspots such as Seychelles, Fiji, Costa Rica, Bonaire, and Mexico. His passion refined to shark conservation after his first internship abroad in Fiji 2013, where he identified and named every white tip reef shark in Shark Reef Marine Reserve.

Nathan holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Studies from UC Santa Cruz, with a concentration in Conservation Biology. At UC Santa Cruz, Nathan worked with the California Marine Sanctuary Foundation to create and distribute outreach material about California’s MPAs. He wrote his senior thesis on bycatch mitigation for open ocean sharks, his favorite species are the Thresher and Mako shark. Nathan spent his early career writing extensively about sharks for the Florida news site, Sharkophile.com and became a PADI Instructor with 7 specialty instructor certifications. When he isn’t scuba diving or writing about sharks, you can find him mountain biking or running on a trail in Santa Cruz, California.
