About Benjamin Shanafelt

I’ve grown up on the west coast of North America. Born in California, grew up in Washington, studied undergrad in British Columbia and most recently lived in Oregon. I have always had a passion for exploring the beautiful coastal world.

From 2015 until 2019 I was an undergraduate student at Quest University Canada in Squamish British Columbia where I studied Coastal Ecology. My Keystone, or undergraduate thesis, was conducting an All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory and designing a long-term monitoring program for Dabob Bay, WA.

After graduating in 2019 with my Bachelor’s in Arts & Science, I began working on a habitat restoration crew through the Washington Conservation Corps.

Following my service term with WCC, I moved to Seaside Oregon to work as a fisheries observer for the company Alaskan Observers Inc. In this position I worked on commercial fishing vessels, as contracted by NOAA, to collect fisheries data as the sole scientist on board commercial trawling vessels.

After completing my year long contract with AOI, I worked for Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife as a Salmon Surveyor, monitoring the Fall and Winter chinook and coho salmon runs. And following my work with ODFW I worked at a local aquarium in an education position.

Throughout these 4 years of living life, I focused immensely on creating community, for myself and others.

I am now pursuing my Master’s Degree in Marine Science through NU’s Three Seas Program.
