Prof. DeSteno in the New York Times

Congratulations to Professor David DeSteno, who recently wrote a piece for the New York Times Sunday Review. Prof DeSteno’s article, “The Funny Thing About Adversity,” discusses research he’s conducted along with graduate student Daniel Lim into the question of whether or not adversity promotes compassion. Their findings, along with other research in the field, indicate a little bit of both–that having experienced suffering often heightens the compassion we feel for others, except as regards specific painful events that an individual has personally lived through, in which case the compassion they feel for others experiencing similar challenges is often decreased.
