Fee-Based Services

Certain services and equipment are available for use on a fee-for-service or collaborative basis, including:

Analytical Equipment:

TESCAN VEGA3 LMU SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPE

SEM[1]

A variable pressure tungsten filament TESCAN VEGA3 LMU scanning electron microscope that can be operated in both a high-vacuum mode for maximum image resolution of coated samples, as well as a low-vacuum mode that enables investigation of non-conductive specimens in their natural, uncoated state.

X-MAX 80An attached OXFORD X-MAX 80 Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (80 mm2 EDS) can be utilized to analyze and map most elements on the periodic table down to 100 ppm concentrations and 1 micron spatial resolution. An attached OXFORD NORDLYS-NANO Energy Backscatter Diffractometer (EBSD) can be used to analyze and map mineralogy and crystal structure down to 1 micron spatial resolution.

Hourly rates (external/internal):

SEM: $60/$40

SEM + EDS/EBSD: $120/$90

SEM + EDS + EBSD: $180/135

RIGAKU MINIFLEX 600 X-RAY DIFFRACTOMETER

A RIGAKU MINIFLEX 600 X-ray diffractometer for powder x-ray diffraction with Rietveld refinement to assist with determination of mineralogical identity and quantity, percent crystallinity, crystallite size and strain, lattice parameters, and molecular structure.

Hourly rates (external/internal): $25/$20

EXPERIMENTAL CULTURING ARRAYOA_System

Fully controllable 72-tank array for culture experiments to assess the impact of acidification, temperature, salinity, nutrients, and light on marine organisms. Available for flow-through or recirculating operation utilizing either fresh or salt water.

Rates per tank per month (external/internal): $50/$40

ANALYSIS OF SEAWATER DIC AND TA

VINDTA3C

VINDTA 3C with UIC COULOMETER for the analysis of TA (total alkalinity) and DIC (dissolved inorganic carbon) of water. TA is analyzed by closed-cell potentiometric Gran titration. DIC is analyzed by coulometry. Minimum sample size is 250 mL, stored in ground-glass stoppered borosilicate bottles sealed with vacuum grease.

Rates for combined TA/DIC analysis per sample (external/internal): $60/$50

LIGHT MICROSCOPY

Nikon LV100
NIKON LV100 Polarizing light microscope equipped with head-cooled digital camera for high resolution imaging and photomicrography of petrographic thin-sections. Polarizing microscope is outfitted with a fluorescence module in order to visualize calcein markers (and other wavelength-compatible dyes) within thin-sectioned material.

Nikon AZ100
NIKON AZ100 stereomicroscope equipped with automated z-stage and head-cooled digital camera for high resolution wide-field fully-focused 2D and 3D imaging and photomicrography.

Hourly rates (external/internal): $20/$15
