Exciting changes for the Three Seas and MS Marine Biology program

It is our pleasure to announce an important transition for Northeastern University’s Three Seas Program. Three Seas is currently a hybrid nine-month undergraduate and a 15-month graduate level experiential and abroad program in marine biology. In an effort to better serve the unique needs of undergraduate and graduate students, Three Seas will begin to operate as two concurrent programs, with one program cohort reserved for graduate students and the other for undergraduate students. This approach will increase the program’s ability to serve a growing number of marine biology majors and students wanting to pursue a Master of Science in Marine Biology degree at Northeastern.

In addition to the cohort of 24 undergraduate and graduate students that will be admitted for the 2015 fall semester, the program will admit a cohort of 24 undergraduate students for the spring of 2016, studying at Northeastern’s Marine Science Center in Nahant, MA for the spring semester and traveling to Friday Harbor Labs in Washington and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama during the following fall semester. Over the next few years, the concurrent programs will migrate to a more focused admissions process that admits graduate students for the fall start and undergraduates for the spring start.

An informational meeting about the Three Seas program will be held on Monday, October 27, 2014 at 6 p.m. in 106 West Village G. Program staff and faculty will discuss the application process, requirements, and curriculum.

Applications for next year’s program are being accepted now and students are encouraged to apply by January 1, 2015 for a fall 2015 start and by March 1, 2015 for a spring 2016 start. Visit northeastern.edu/threeseas for more information.
