Seven students standing together at ASBMB Active site meeting

NU ASBMB Chapter again hosts successful Regional Meeting

For the third year in a row, the NU Chapter of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology was chosen to host the ASBMB Northeast Regional Meeting. This event was held in November, and showcased the work of talented undergraduates from numerous schools in the region through a judged poster competition, followed by a keynote talk by Dr. Jeff Gelles of Brandeis University (‘Recording the Birth and Development of an Individual RNA Molecule’).

Registration was extremely successful, with 19 area schools represented, and 40 poster abstracts were submitted from 13 of those schools. Each poster presenter was scored by multiple judges on seven criteria, such as scientifically-grounded presentation of project goals, clarity of data presentation, and sound explanation of conclusions and future work. This resulted in the distribution of the three prizes, which were $500 travel awards to support travel to the ASBMB Annual Meeting in April 2018 in San Diego.

Attendees and judges alike were impressed with the overall quality of the presented work, and there was ample opportunity for undergraduates to learn about each others’ research experiences to date and future plans. The Biochemistry Program commends the ASBMB NU Chapter student executive board on the successful organization of this major event!
