RECENT JOB PLACEMENTS: Located in Boston, Northeastern University is in a region that is the hub to many high-tech, financial, biotech companies. Recent graduates work in tech companies such as Raytheon, Bristol Technology, and financial companies such as State Street and Fidelity Investments.

NEW INTERNSHIP COURSE: An elective internship course has recently been added to allow students to obtain experiential education during the program. The first internship course is being run in Summer 2014.

NEW APPLIED MATH COURSES: The Department has been working to increase the number of applied mathematics courses that are offered each year, and making these courses more relevant to employment in industry. In particular, we have started to add courses that are developed and taught by professionals from industry who have expertise in state-of-the-art mathematical and computational practices. The first such course, Numerical Analysis 1, was developed by Stuart Brorson and Michael Rohan and team-taught in Spring 2014. This was a big success; one student wrote “They are excellent professors with great industry experience. Please offer more courses by them.” We are following that advice with Numerical Analysis 2 in Fall 2014. Other new graduate courses in statistical machine learning, game theory and inverse problems will be added in the years ahead.

NEW APPLIED MATH FACULTY: The Math Department also added two new full-time faculty members in applied mathematics this year, and they will begin contributing their expertise to the MSAM program right away: Assistant Professor Gabor Lippner will teach Graph Theory in Fall 2014, and Associate Professor Ting Zhou is developing a new course in Inverse Problems to be offered at a future date.
