Inverse Problems: Visibility and Invisibility

The National Science Foundation has awarded a three year grant to Professor Ting Zhou to fund her research on ”Inverse Problems: Visibility and Invisibility”, starting in July 2015.

Professor Zhou will study the ways in which scattered, absorbed and transmitted waves can be used to determine the properties of a material.  ‘Inverse Problems’ refers to the toolkit of mathematical methods which are used to make the link between observation (the scattered and transmitted waves) and the material under investigation. One exciting direction of research is the possibility of creating specially engineered materials which can be hidden from or made invisible to such probing by waves.
