Northeastern University College of Science Dean Kenneth Henderson delivered the opening lecture at the Universities of Scotland Inorganic Chemistry Conference earlier this week, held at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland.
As an alumnus of Strathclyde, Henderson spoke about his journey from East Kilbride, Scotland — his hometown — to a career in chemistry and, most recently, the dean’s position at Northeastern’s College of Science. “It was a great honor to be invited by the graduate students to open this outstanding event. This conference was important in my own career development, as I was a former speaker and conference organizer, so it was a real pleasure to give back.”

This year’s conference, now in its 50th year, marks the meeting’s golden jubilee. The annual two-day meeting rotates between the major research universities in Scotland, and is entirely organized and led by graduate students. Apart from the plenary lectures given by notable international academics, the seminars and poster presentations are all given by either graduate students or postdoctoral researchers. For 50 years now this conference has provided a welcoming venue for students to share their research results, and interact with their peers from across the country.
