Battery Experts Power Up and Talk About Plane Problems

When a Boeing 787 had a fire onboard while at Boston Logan airport a couple of weeks ago it seems that was just the tip of the iceberg for the fleet.

Shortly after the fire, which was contained to a small section of the empty plane, another 787 had to make an emergency landing in Japan after a warning of smoke in the cockpit.

Both of these situations are linked to lithium-ion batteries with which the planes are fitted. After these emergencies regulators around the globe grounded the planes.

Now, lithium-ion battery experts, and Northeastern University faculty members in the chemistry department, Sanjeev Mukerjee and K.M. Abraham are weighing in on how the batteries are being used and what the possible problems may be.

Mukerjee spoke with the New York Times and Abraham spoke with Wired.
