PreMed and PreHealth
The College of Science is proud to be home to 75 percent of the university’s pre-med student population. Given the fundamental importance of science knowledge required for pre-med, we are able to provide rigorous courses across our all of our disciplines. Our curricula have been designed to meet the needs of our students who are interested in pursuing a pre-med track. Pre-med course requirements can be integrated into all College of Science degree programs. Since medical schools place a priority on well-rounded achievement, we are delighted to find pre-med students represented in all of our departments.
Students majoring in the sciences often complete many of the required pre-med coursework simply by following their degree requirements. Pre-med courses that are not required by their major may be taken as elective credit, which may be counted towards their overall degree requirements. “Opportunities at Northeastern University allowed me to develop into a strong applicant and a successful medical student. Between co-ops in campus labs, doing research in South Africa, and working and volunteering at Boston Children’s Hospital, among other opportunities I took advantage of at Northeastern, I gained invaluable experience (and I think made for an interesting and unique applicant). Additionally, pursuing a pre-med track in the College of Science at Northeastern University offers a unique opportunity for students to begin fulfilling their experiential preparation earlier in their academic career through our co-op program. Students will have the opportunity to pursue co-op experiences such as: bench research, clinical research, and patient care. By utilizing the co-op opportunities throughout the undergraduate experience, students may be able to reduce or eliminate the need for a gap year(s) after graduation.

“At Northeastern, I was a Biochemistry major and a human services minor. Sometime into my third year I realized I was very interested in becoming a physician-scientist. Now that I am pursuing a DO/PhD looking back at my experience with my biochemistry degree, co-ops and minor I feel that I got a really unique experience to prepare me for medical and graduate school. It was through experiences and opportunities at Northeastern that I was able to find the right path. With the help of my peers we started a Pre-Student of Osteopathic Medicine (Pre-SOMA) club on campus to explore different options in medicine. The Pre-Health office gave us tremendous support in preparing our applications and in getting the Pre-SOMA club off the ground. I found that the my biochemistry courses prepared me well for the basic science curriculum in my DO and PhD degrees and co-op and research on campus gave me the skills I need to work in a Microbiology research lab.”
Whether interested in medical school, dental school, or veterinary school, students should research requirements and plan a program of study as early as possible in consultation with both their College of Science academic advisor and PreHealth Program advisor to ensure that requirements will be completed in a timely fashion. The PreMed and PreHealth Advising Program provides support for Northeastern students who are planning to pursue doctoral-level training in medicine, including allopathic medicine (MD), dentistry, optometry, osteopathic medicine, podiatric medicine, and veterinary medicine.
