About the Program
In summer 2022, the Northeastern University Marine Science Center will host 5 students from 2-yr and 4-yr colleges for 8-week, paid, cohort-based research internships at the Center. Each student will be paired with a research lab at the Marine Science Center to complete research projects around a common theme of urbanization and ecosystem changes in salt marsh communities. Learn more about research labs at the Center on our website, here.
In addition to planning, conducting, and presenting research, students will attend workshops and seminars at the Marine Science Center to learn more about emerging research and career pathways in the field. We will also connect students to research partners, faculty, and graduate students working at the Center, to provide increased opportunities for mentorship and collaboration. Internship participants will also work with the Center’s Outreach Program Team to develop their science communication skills, and will have an opportunity to contribute to ongoing communication and outreach efforts.
Dates, Financial Information, and Location
The 2022 IDEA internship will run full time for 8 weeks, from Tuesday, June 21 through Friday, August 12. Hours may vary based on transportation schedule, lab and fieldwork schedules, but will be approximately full time (35-40 hours per week) over the course of the internship. Weekend work is not required.
Students will receive a stipend of $4,000 for the 8-week full-time internship ($2,000 per month). Each intern will also be provided a stipend of up to $150 to cover the costs of personal items needed for field work (e.g., waterproof boots, sunhat, mask/snorkel).
The Marine Science Center campus is located at 430 Nahant Road in Nahant, Massachusetts. There is an MBTA bus line that serves Nahant, but schedules and stops are limited.
Daily shuttle transportation will be available for internship participants; the shuttle will pick up and drop off students at North Shore Community College, (accessible by several MBTA bus lines and the MBTA commuter rail) to transport to the Marine Science Center’s Nahant campus. Parking is available at the Center for those who drive or carpool.
