Akshita Virdy ’26, Cell and Molecular Biology

What inspired you to pursue your current field of study/research?

My interest in biology started in the 7th grade, when I became fascinated with how a cell works, knowing that each component is functioning in such complex ways. Since then, my interests have expanded into medicine as I love working with other individuals and am a very collaborative person. Now, at Northeastern, I am a Cell and Molecular Biology major on the pre-medical track!

Have you participated in any co-op or study-abroad programs? How was that experience?

Yes! I was a patient care technician (PCT) in my past co-op at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, working on the Hemotology Oncology/ Bone Marrow Transplant Floor. I loved this experience as it provided me with a perspective in medicine I would not have had before. I connected not only with the nurses, attending physicians, residents, and fellow PCTs I worked with, but also with my patients. I remember a patient, who despite their multiple diagnoses, was incredibly positive throughout their treatment—this is the kind of light I hope to be in the field of oncology in the future.

What kind of extracurricular activities are you involved in?

I am the co-president of the Undergraduate Research Club! I helped found this club about two years ago and am so happy to see how far it has come. We hold mixers to provide club members the opportunity to connect with professors in a small group setting, so they can learn more about their experiences and career paths.

What has been the highlight of your experience in COS so far?

A highlight of my experience in COS was having the opportunity to create an event to highlight the health of pre-medical students through the support of the College of Science, PreMed/PreHealth Advising Program, and TEDxNortheasternU. Through a conversation with Stephanie Frazitta, director of undergraduate advising, while tabling for an early admitted students event in my role as a COS Ambassador, I discovered I was enthusiastic about motivational speaking and shedding light on the burnout of medical professionals. I am so grateful I was able to have this conversation with her!

Have you had any professors or mentors who really made an impact on you?

My Inquires of Biological Sciences: Stem Cells professor, Missy McElligott, really made an impact on me because she was the one that sparked my passion of stem cells in my first year. Since then, she has supported me throughout my years at Northeastern and in my club, the Undergraduate Research Club.

Where do you see your field of study/research taking you?

I can see myself going to medical school!

What kind of impact do you hope to make after you leave Northeastern?

After Northeastern, I want to leave behind the message of perseverance despite failing. College is truly what you make it! So, connect with others, and explore what you enjoy because this is the time to figure out what you like. You are truly capable of more than you think you are.

What advice would you give students interested in pursuing a degree in science?

I would say to network with everyone and to lead with passion throughout this degree. This is what leads you to success!
