Dr. Sasilada Sirirungruang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Northeastern University and a core member of the Institute for Plant-Human Interface (IPHI). Her research focuses on developing biosynthetic enzyme technologies for human and planetary health, with an emphasis on discovering and engineering enzymes that expand chemical diversity in natural products and enable sustainable biomanufacturing. Before joining Northeastern, Dr. Sirirungruang was a postdoctoral associate at the Joint BioEnergy Institute and the University of California, Berkeley, working with Professor Patrick Shih in the Department of Plant and Microbial Biology. There, she developed large-scale functional screening approaches for plant UDP-dependent glycosyltransferases, integrating substrate-multiplexed enzyme assays, high-resolution LC-MS/MS, computational analysis, and machine-learning-guided enzyme prediction. Her work revealed new glycosyltransferase activities, unusual substrate scopes, and mechanistic principles governing glycoside formation. Dr. Sirirungruang received her Ph.D. in Molecular and Cell Biology from the University of California, Berkeley, where she worked with Professor Michelle Chang on engineering biosynthetic pathways for site-selective fluorine incorporation into polyketide natural products. This work demonstrated an enzyme-based strategy for producing fluorinated erythromycin precursors through cell-free enzymatic cascades and microbial fermentation. She received her B.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she double majored in Chemistry and Biology.
