Richard Liu

  • Assistant Professor

Department

Professor Liu is an experimental condensed matter physicist interested in understanding and controlling quantum materials through atomic-scale measurements and AI-guided experimentation. His research combines scanning probe microscopy with machine learning to investigate topological and strongly correlated materials, as well as ferroelectric behavior. His group develops methods for automated atomic fabrication and adaptive characterization, with the goal of connecting materials growth and measurements in a closed experimental loop. These efforts aim to determine how composition and local structure govern material properties and to guide the discovery of new quantum materials. Professor Liu received his PhD in Physics from Harvard University, where he studied topological and strongly correlated materials using scanning tunneling microscopy.
