Katia Zolotovsky is an assistant professor at Northeastern University the Art + Design Department at the College of Arts, Media, and Design, with a joint appointment in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at the College of Science.
She is an architect and a biologist and holds a PhD in Computation from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Her dissertation focused on the material and morphometric growth regulation of bacterial cellulose via genetic engineering, in-situ editing of material properties, and 3D printed bioreactor.
At Northeastern, Dr. Zolotovsky directs the BioInteractive Design lab (BInD) on the intersection of design and science. Her research group brings together designers, scientists, and engineers to explore how to to integrate chemical and biological interactivity in new materials, devices, wearables, and building components for health and climate adaptation.
Dr. Zolotovsky’s interdisciplinary research has been published in both design and science high-impact journals. She has won awards at international conferences, including the Living Machine, Education and Research in Computer-Aided Design in Europe, and EURO Bio-inspired Materials. She serves on the editorial board of Research Directions Biotechnology Design, Cambridge University Press. Her work has been supported by national grants such as the NSF Division of Materials Research, Somerson Sustainability Innovation Fund, and NSF’s Coastal Ecology Assessment Innovation and Modeling.
