Preparing for Roman with a Per-Supernova Sightline Dust Correction

Dust scattered between galaxies can distort the brightness of distant supernovae, introducing errors into measurements of the universe’s expansion history; a problem that will grow more significant with next-generation surveys like NASA’s Roman Space Telescope. This project develops a method to correct for this dust on a per-supernova basis, using the properties of foreground galaxies along each line of sight to predict and remove its effect. The resulting framework will provide the first full test of this approach and will be directly applicable to Roman’s supernova cosmology program.
