CAREER: Engineering order in frustrated quantum materials via strong light-matter coupling
Quantum materials hold extraordinary promise for future technologies, but many exhibit quantum frustration, where competing forces prevent them from settling into useful magnetic, electronic, and topological states. This project explores how ultrafast laser pulses can relieve frustration and unlock new quantum phases inaccessible under normal conditions. The advances could transform quantum sensing, ultrafast electronic and spintronic devices, and energy-efficient materials, strengthening national leadership in quantum and microelectronics.
A vertically integrated education program spanning high school through undergraduate levels addresses the shortage of quantum-trained workers. It redesigns introductory physics for non-majors, creates a Quantum Physics Bootcamp, develops high school research activities, and offers paid internships. All materials will be openly shared nationwide.
