Perception and Sensory Processing

Perception and sensory processing research examines how the brain receives, interprets, and integrates sensory information from the environment. Our world-class faculty are studying vision, hearing, touch, taste, and smell and exploring how neural systems transform stimuli into meaningful experiences. Their work advances understanding of sensory disorders, multisensory integration, and how perception shapes behavior and cognition.

  • bexnew

    Dr. Bex uses cross-disciplinary approaches to study basic and clinical vision science, extending visual perception models to real-world conditions while developing diagnostic and rehabilitation methods for blinding eye diseases like macular degeneration, glaucoma, and amblyopia. 

  • Dr. Eskew studies visual psychophysics, particularly color detection and discrimination, constructing and testing quantitative models of color mechanisms, ON and OFF pathways, and S-cone asymmetries.

  • Dr. Kwon studies visual perception and brain plasticity following visual impairment, using behavioral experiments, eye tracking, neuroimaging, and computational modeling to investigate how eye disorders affect visual processing.

  • Jonathan-Peelle

    Dr. Peelle’s research is centered on the psychological and neural basis for human communication, particularly in the interaction between sensory and cognitive, and social factors.

  • Dr. Seitz studies perception, learning, and multisensory processing using diverse methodologies to create accessible tools and personalized training that improve cognitive performance in underserved populations.
