Muckenhoupt Scholarship
The Muckenhoupt Scholarship is awarded each year to Northeastern undergraduate students majoring in the sciences or math, including fields such as biology, medicine, agriculture, geology, and wildlife management, who “will use their training in science to benefit the environment of the earth and the life upon it.”
Meet the 2026 Awardees
Congratulations to Alice Goldberg and Mariana Kaulbach, this year’s recipients of this year’s Dr. Carl Muckenhoupt Scholarship! These recipients were selected from an impressive pool of academically exceptional and environmentally inclined students.

Mariana Kaulbach ’27
Major: Environmental and Sustainability Sciences
Concentration: Conservation, Restoration, and
Management
Minor: Public Health
Having worked on and around city farms since high school, Mariana is primarily interested in sustainable agriculture, urban development, and their connection to environmental and public health. She shares that she feels lucky to have worked alongside incredibly dedicated and talented scientists throughout her time at Northeastern.
Most recently, Mariana completed a research assistant co-op in the Lotterhos Lab, studying population trends and behavior of an invasive crop pest through a combination of field and lab work. She also created educational materials to communicate this research with farmers and members of the local community. Mariana is passionate about bridging scientific research and knowledge with everyday impact, highlighting environmental education and community engagement in work towards creating a food system — and climate — that is healthy and sustainable for all.

Alice Goldberg ’27
Major: Chemical Engineering
Concentration: Sustainability and Energy
Alice is from Honolulu, Hawai’i, where firsthand experience has shown how sustainable practices positively impact the surrounding environment. Through programs like the Hokulani Mentorship and Earth Planets ‘ike Kuleana with the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa, Alice was inspired to pursue a career in environmental science, with a hope to help mitigate ecological footprints through innovation.
At Northeastern, Alice is a part of the EcoBioMaterials Design Lab, where ongoing research has explored biodegradable plastic alternatives as well as analyzing the chemical composition of pyroplastics and their effects on the environment. A geologic field seminar abroad in Iceland revealed how the natural environment can be manipulated into reusable sources of energy, sparking a primary interest in geothermal energy and its potential applications back home. After graduating, Alice hopes to combine a background in chemical engineering with an interest in material science and alternative energy to develop novel environmental solutions.
