STEM Outreach Internship
at Northeastern University’s Marine Science Center
Summer II: June 29 – August 14, 2026

This paid internship with the MSC Outreach Program is geared toward MES undergraduate and Master’s students interested in science communication, outreach, and outdoor/informal STEM education. Interns are trained to lead the MSC’s annual Coastal Ocean Science Academy and other summer programming for K-12 students and the public. Additional responsibilities include caring for intertidal animals in our on-site aquaria, developing content for our Educator Resource Portal and social media in collaboration with MES researchers, and maintaining educational program gear.

Multiple internship spots will be awarded.
- Duration: June 29 through August 14, 2026 (Summer II) (7 weeks)
- Hours: 35-40 hours per week (Mon – Fri)
- Location: Northeastern University Marine Science Center, Nahant, MA
- Compensation: $20.40/hr
- Transportation: A free daily shuttle from NU Boston campus to the MSC/Nahant campus is available on a first come, first served basis. If driving and/or carpooling, parking is also available at the MSC (free for current students/staff).
- Housing: Not available at the MSC/Nahant campus.
Eligibility
This internship is open to Northeastern undergraduates and Master’s students, and to those graduating from Northeastern in 2026.
Please Note: students taking classes in Summer I or II are not allowed to work more than 20hr/wk, and students not taking classes are not allowed to work more than 40hr/wk for all student jobs combined. Before you apply, please be sure that you have availability to commit 35hr/wk to the internship.
Qualifications
- Basic knowledge of ecology, biology, and/or New England coastal habitats preferred, but not required
- Organized, adaptable, creative and communicative
- Ability to comfortably lead groups on foot over uneven and slippery rocky shore and to lift and move 5-gallon buckets of seawater
- Willingness/eligibility to drive NU vehicles preferred but NOT required (license, 21+ years old, clean driving record)
- First Aid and CPR certification preferred, or willingness to become certified
