We make countless decisions every day and want our choices to lead to good outcomes for ourselves, others, and society. So, why do we often make bad decisions? And how can we design effective interventions to improve decisions in various contexts? In this talk, I will present computational modeling evidence from survey and laboratory experiments and argue that we can understand decision making through two distinct cognitive processes—the quantity (“how much”) and quality (“how”) of people’s thinking.
