Hannah Powers had a very busy spring in Germany while on co-op at the University of Kaiserlautern. The linguistics and psychology major was a research assistant working on multiple projects.

Powers conducted participants through eye-tracking experiments. She explained, “We’re interested in how speakers of different native languages read and process sentence constructions that are often found in scientific writing in English.”

She also collaborated with Canadian researchers in developing a Communicative Development Inventory adaptation for Inuktitut, an Inuit language spoken in Canada. The questionnaire allows speech-language pathologists to evaluate whether children are developing language and vocabulary skills normally.

As if that wasn’t enough, Powers also helped plan the International Symposium on Bilingual Processing in Adults and Children (ISBPAC), a linguistics conference in Kaiserslautern in April.

During her co-op Powers traveled to multiple cities in Germany, as well as over to Paris. And when the co-op was over she spent three weeks traveling throughout Europe.
