Lisa Feldman Barrett, a University Distinguished Professor of Psychology, has theory on emotions that goes against classic thinking. This theory is featured in the new season of the podcast Invisibilia. She’s written about it in her new book, How Emotions Are Made: The Secret Life of the Brain.
She was featured on NPR’s health news site, “Shots,” talking about this theory.
“The ‘classical view’ of emotions as innate and limited in variety, she says, ‘matches the way that many of us experience emotion, as if something’s happening outside of our control,’ she tells Shots. ‘But the problem with this set of ideas is that the data don’t support them. There’s a lot of evidence which challenges this view from every domain of science that’s ever studied it.'”
