Nahant Environmental Education Initiatives Recognized

Marine Science Center partners at the Johnson Elementary School and the Nahant Education Foundation (NEF) have been recognized at the Massachusetts State House on Monday, May 6th with the Secretary’s Awards for Excellence in Energy and Environmental Education. Since 2015, the Marine Science Center, NEF and the Johnson school have partnered on a place-based, marine science education curriculum, that allows all students at the school to study and explore different habitats around their coastal town, via three indoor and outdoor lessons for each grade per year led by the Marine Science Center Outreach Program. Additional environmental education projects at the school include partnership with Nahant SWIM for education around geology and pollution prevention, and a new Outdoor Play Initiative with a school/community garden, and opportunities for students to create nature inspired art. Congratulations to our partners on this recognition of their tremendous efforts to connect Nahant students to the natural environment.
