Leah Dickens receives Outstanding Graduate Student Award

Congratulations to Leah Dickens, a fifth-year graduate student in our department’s Social/Personality area, who received this year’s Outstanding Graduate Student Award for teaching!

The Outstanding Graduate Student Awards are presented annually, at Northeastern’s Academic Honors Convocation. Awards are presented in the areas of research, teaching, community service, and experiential learning. The teaching award, which Leah received, is given to a student who has demonstrated an exceptional ability to communicate ideas and concepts in the classroom, and a talent for inspiring students.

Leah’s teaching philosophy has two major components: engagement and communication. She regularly receives outstanding ratings as a teaching assistant and as a primary instructor for undergraduate classes. Leah exceeds expectations in other ways as well: She has organized multiple graduate teaching workshops, compiled teaching resources for new teaching assistants, and mentored undergraduates for graduate school applications. Her advisor, Prof. Dave DeSteno, says, “Leah is that rare scholar who not only possesses enormous scientific expertise, but also has an enthusiasm and ability to share knowledge with students.”

Well done, Leah!
