I’m pleased to share with you that Dr. John R. Engen, professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology and Barnett Institute of Chemical and Biological Analysis faculty fellow, has been named a College of Science Distinguished Professor.
The College of Science Distinguished Professor rank is reserved for the most outstanding faculty in the college. During John’s time at Northeastern, he has made a deep and lasting impact on the college’s mission and success. His performance and professionalism establishes a standard to which other faculty members should aspire.
John is a recognized expert in the area of understanding proteins and protein conformation with mass spectrometry. A method championed by John is now applied to the development of most biopharmaceutical drugs. He has published over 125 papers on the topic of hydrogen exchange and given hundreds of invited lectures worldwide to academia and industry.
John holds two BS degrees (molecular biology and biochemistry) from Union College and a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Nebraska. He completed postdoctoral work at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany with Giulio Superti-Furga and at the Los Alamos National Laboratory with E. Morton Bradbury. In 2002 he began his own academic laboratory as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Molecular Biology at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
John joined Northeastern in 2006 as a tenured Associate Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology and was promoted to Full Professor in 2011. Since his arrival to Northeastern, John has secured more than $9.4 million in research support from federal and corporate sources.
John is a Fellow of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), received the 2009 Arthur F. Findeis Award from the American Chemical Society, and served on the Board of Directors for the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS) from 2009-2011. In 2012-2013, he was a Visiting Professor of Biochemistry in the laboratory of Prof. F. Ulrich Hartl at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried, Germany. John was honored by Northeastern in 2015 with an Excellence in Teaching Award.
John’s accomplishments and contributions to the scientific community are immeasurable, and it is an honor to have him as a part of the College of Science and Northeastern University. Please join me in congratulating John on his well-deserved promotion to College of Science Distinguished Professor.
