How Will Global Change Impact Salt Marsh Carbon Storage?

Salt marshes are really excellent at storing carbon in their water logged soils but there is still much we do not know about how global change drivers such as sea level rise and rising temperatures will affect this carbon storage. A recent study by Associate Professor Jennifer Bowen and colleagues, published in the journal Nature Geoscience, examines what is known and unknown about climate change impacts on marsh carbon storage. The study, led by Bowen’s collaborator Amanda Spivak of University of Georgia, assess how changing decomposition processes in the marsh might change carbon storage capabilities, and makes recommendations that will assist resource managers develop solutions for climate resilience in these important coastal habitats.
