Graduate Co-op

Co-op is an educational opportunity in which you alternate semesters of academic study with 4-8 months of full-time employment in a position related to your field of study. Co-op offers real world experience and helps build skills and areas of expertise that complement the academic curriculum. The experiential component of your degree will help you:

Several graduate students attended the spring career fair where they met with potential employers.

  • Gain skills and experience that make them sought after employees;
  • Explore jobs in the public and private sectors;
  • Clarify short and long term professional, academic, and personal goals;
  • Integrate classroom and workplace learning; and
  • Develop relationships with mentors and peers.

Co-op assignments, which are found with the help of your Math Co-op Faculty Coordinator are a valuable work experience prior to graduation. Not only does the “hands-on” work experiences provide great learning opportunities but they also offer valuable networking contacts and references for later employment.

Typically, the co-op will be four to eight months in length, depending on the requirements of the employment site. The co-op occurs sometime after the first two semesters of coursework and will allow for experiential learning engagement not found in the classroom. Students who choose to participate will enroll in Introduction to Co-op, a non-credit mandatory course, which prepares students for job searching.

Ruo Yang stands in front of a window“I am currently doing a co-op with Fidelity Investments. It is an extraordinary experience to learn and apply mathematical skills into the real world rather than with academics only. The fantastic program (co-op in applied mathematics) is the way to transform the abstract mathematical knowledge to the different actual projects which increase the interests with math.”
