Physics Colloquium: “Assigning temperatures to eigenstates of isolated systems”
Physics
Speaker: Masud Haque (Institut fuer Theoretische Physik TU Dresden, Germany)
Abstract: Understanding the statistical mechanics of isolated (quantum) systems is a topic of widespread current interest. In this effort, an inescapable issue is the definition of temperature, which is not a priori defined within closed-system quantum mechanics. After motivating the general field and framework, I will examine and compare different possible ways of assigning temperatures to energies, or equivalently, to eigenstates.
