Psychology Colloquium: Biosignatures for Pain
College of Science
Pain is an important health problem affecting the quality of life in a large part of the population. Understanding pain is complicated and it is thought to emerge from distributed brain networks whose inputs include sensory, affective and evaluative processes. In this talk we discuss a number of projects using neuroimaging to study and assess pain. This includes the development of predictive models or ‘brain signatures’ of pain, as well as uncovering brain-based mediators to explain the relationship between a thermal stimulus and pain ratings. Both techniques are developed by integrating brain activity across multiple brain systems.
