BS/MS in Chemistry
The PlusOne Program at Northeastern University allows students to accelerate their study by applying graduate credits taken as an undergraduate toward both an undergraduate and a graduate degree in an intensive five-year period of study including significant research experience. This program allows Chemistry or Biochemistry majors the opportunity to complete a Master’s-level thesis from their original research under the direction of faculty in Chemistry. The BS/MS program is entirely compatible with the goals of a pre-med student.
Benefits of completing the MS Chemistry PlusOne program:
- Professionals with graduate level experience are likely to be more competitive upon entering the workforce.
- Completing a Master’s level research project can better prepare students for further advanced study.
- A PlusOne degree program can accelerate receipt of a graduate degree and reduce its cost, since in most cases, a PlusOne degree student can earn a graduate degree with only one additional year of study beyond the Bachelor’s degree.
Students will not jeopardize their BS degree nor affect opportunities to pursue higher degrees by participating in the BS/MS program.
Interested applicants should meet with their Biochemistry or Chemistry undergraduate major academic advisor to discuss whether this program is right for them. Then they should consult with Chemistry and Chemical Biology graduate program personnel for instructions on how to apply.
Students should apply for the BS/MS program after their fifth academic semester and more than two semesters before expecting to earn the BS degree. Before applying, students must have completed 80 semester hours and one co-op experience, and must have identified a thesis advisor for their research.
Application deadlines are August 1 and December 1.
