Inaugural Barry L. Karger Medal in Bioanalysis awarded

Professor Matthias Mann, Director in the Department of Proteomics and Signal Transduction at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Munich, Germany, was the recipient the Inaugural Barry L. Karger Medal in Bioanalysis on October 16, 2015.

This award, established by friends and alumni of the Barnett Institute of Chemical and Biological Analysis at Northeastern University, is in honor of founding director, Professor Barry Karger.

“I’m greatly honored to receive the inaugural Barry Karger Award. Barry has been a great pioneer in our field for as long as I can remember, so I am overwhelmed by being the recipient of his award. Visiting Northeastern University has been a great pleasure, not the least because of all the exciting new technology developments going on here.”

Karger’s research focuses on the development and application of separations and mass spectrometric analysis to problems of biological and clinical relevance.

Karger’s research group collaborates with scientists in biotechnology to characterize the structure of biopharmaceuticals and biosimilars. In addition, his group has joint programs with biologists and clinical scientists in understanding cancer. Recently, for example, he has attacked exploring rare cancerous cells in blood for clinical diagnosis.
